According to folklore, the seeds within the fruit of the humble American Persimmon tree (Diospyros virginiana) are supposed to predict the coming winter. My grandparents gathered persimmons from trees growing in the wild around their home each fall. After enjoying the delicious flesh of the fruit, they would then proceed to cut the seeds in half lengthwise to see the shape of the embryo inside. Its shape provided a clue about the coming winter.
Spoon - The winter will have heavy rain and/or snow.
Knife - The winds will "cut" you to the bone.
Fork - It will be so mild you will weather the winter without a coat.
Generally, my family found the predictions to be accurate. This year, I cut open three seeds and here are my results: two spoons and one knife.
Do you see the shapes?
I will plan on a cold, wet winter!
