Summer on the Farm by Robin Moline
My grandmother did not own a clothes dryer until the last ten or so years of her life and she lived to be 85. Clothes were always hung out on the line to dry and I was often enlisted to help with this task. Walking barefoot in the grass, dipping and reaching, shaking out each piece until it popped to discourage wrinkles, and the glorious fresh smell encountered when gathering in the dried clothes... this is the stuff idyllic childhoods are made of! From the time I've been out on my own, I've always dreamed of having my very own clothesline. I envision it set partially in the sun (for whites) and partially in the shade (for colors) and close enough to the house for convenience but far enough to catch the breeze.
What about you? Do you have any memories of hanging laundry out to dry? Would you use a clothesline today?
