As I mentioned in my last post, I want to spend 2018 developing new habits and routines to help streamline my home and life using methodology from the 1930s and 40s, an effort I am simply calling the 2018 Project.
Here are the things I want to accomplish in my first challenge:
Daily Household Routines
- Get up with the alarm. - When I was single, I was really good about getting up when the alarm first went off. I rarely ever used the snooze feature. But now that I have my hubby to snuggle with, I find it hard to get up right away, especially when it is cold. However, hitting snooze several times really puts me behind with getting ready for work, making breakfast, and getting R out to the bus on time. One trick I have used in the past to help with this problem is to move the alarm to somewhere across the room. If I have to get up to turn it off, then I might as well stay up.
- Make the bed every morning.
- Establish breakfast menus. - I want to create some breakfast menus for myself and my family that I can repeat to make cooking breakfast an easier, but more varied, experience. For myself, I will be focusing on the foods and portion sizes common to the 1940s. I will create a different set of menus for my family, as needed, since they have different tastes and nutritional needs than me. And since J often needs to leave extra early for work, I want to have breakfast ready by 5:30 am so that he has time to eat.
- Bathe or shower at night. - I really do feel better when I bathe in the evenings. It makes me sleep better and helps with the morning routine.
- Plan my clothes for the next day. - Taking the time to figure out tomorrow's outfit in the evening is another routine that I have done off and on over the years that really helps the mornings go smoother.
- Go to bed by 9:00 pm, 9:30 at the latest. - Alongside my need to get up earlier is my need to get into bed at a reasonable hour.
Organization & Decluttering
- Finish putting away the Christmas decorations.
- Sort and organize photos into albums and put into wooden toy chest. - When combining households, all of our photos and photo albums were dumped together into a large plastic tub. Many of the albums are only partially filled and I want to get all of the loose photos into them for protection. I started on this process over the Christmas and New Years' holidays but have not finished it.
- Clean out and organize cedar chest. - My grandmother's heirloom cedar chest stands at the foot of the bed in the master bedroom. It is filled with various memory items but I don't know what else might be lurking in there and as part of my decluttering effort, I want to tackle areas like this that can be hiding items that I don't really need or want anymore.
- Bring a box of books from the storage shed to sort through. - I'll specifically be looking for the cookbooks so I can weed out any that I don't want and place the ones I do on the book shelf.
- Take items to local women's shelter thrift store to donate. - I started boxing up various décor items and childhood books over the holidays, along with a bag of clothing, to be donated to a local thrift store.
- Organize the exercise equipment. - I want to use the tub that had the photos in it to organize and store some yoga mats, boxing gloves, and such that have just been thrown onto the bed in the spare bedroom. Hopefully, I can find room for this tub in the spare bedroom closet. Otherwise, I will have to rethink how to store this stuff.
