2018 Project, Challenge #1 Progress Report 1

Happy Monday, everyone!  I thought I would pop in with a progress update on my first challenge.  If you recall from my last post, these are the items I want to focus on in the next two weeks.

Daily Household Routines
  1. Get up with the alarm.
  2. Make the bed every morning.
  3. Establish breakfast menus.
  4. Bathe or shower at night.
  5. Plan my clothes for the next day.
  6. Go to bed by 9:00 pm, 9:30 at the latest.

Organization & Decluttering

  1. Finish putting away the Christmas decorations.
  2. Sort and organize photos into albums and put into wooden toy chest.
  3. Clean out and organize cedar chest.
  4. Bring a box of books from the storage shed to sort through.
  5. Take items to local women's shelter thrift store to donate.
  6. Organize the exercise equipment.
With regard to the Daily Household Routines, I am making progress.  Starting with last Thursday, we have managed lights out by 9-9:30 every work night!  I only pushed the snooze button once this morning, which allowed me some snuggle time with J but when the alarm went off again, my feet hit the floor.  I didn't shower last night, because J wanted to watch a movie, which meant I had to do that this morning.  I did shower or bathe some last week at night, so I am starting to put that practice into place, though.  The same goes for planning my clothes the night before.  I didn't do it last night, but did for most of last week.  Although I usually do make the bed, I didn't have time to this morning.  Additionally, I am working on creating my breakfast menus and I am even planning dinner menus, too.

On the Organization and Decluttering front,  I feel like I am doing well.  The last box of Christmas decorations is packed and waiting on the back porch for when J can help me take it to the storage shed since it is so heavy.  I love decorating for the holidays, but I also love the sense of space and austerity that comes after all the decorations are put away again.  It seems to go with the austere landscape outside.  I also finished item #3 this weekend.  Honestly, it was a good exercise to go through the cedar chest just to remind myself of what was in it.  I did find a few things that I decided not to keep and there were a couple of books that I relocated to the bookshelf.  And, I found some photos that needed to be included in what I do for item #2.  I also added some handmade items from when I was a baby that I had found when going through the toy chest.  For item #4, I actually cleared out several boxes and items from the storage shed this weekend.  The good news is that some of them are going straight to the trash.  One box contained a combination of cookbooks and leather-bound classics.  Another only held a handful of framed family pictures that I plan to hang in our hallway in the family picture gallery I have created.  J and I did take some items to the thrift store to donate this weekend (a bag of clothes, a small round table, and a box of knick knacks).  I have some other items set aside for donation that my mom and her cousin want to look through first, so I plan to meet with her some time this week to pass those on and I've given instructions to donate anything they don't want so none of it comes back to me.

Lessons Learned

There is definitely a domino effect involved.  Making sure I do what I'm supposed to do in the evenings helps the mornings go much smoother.  Even though I knew this lesson already, going through the challenge is a good reminder.  I think the big key is getting a bath or shower at night.  That will put me 20-30 minutes ahead in the mornings, so I just need to focus really hard on making that happen this week and finding the right time slot at night so that I have hot water!  I have also noticed that time definitely helps with sentimentality, to some degree.  The longer something is packed away and I'm not seeing or using it daily, the easier it is to let it go.  I am at a point where it is time to let go of some of the first furnishings I bought when I moved out on my own.  Ordinarily, I might be deeply sentimental about them and have a hard time giving away something I bought back when money was so tight but right now, all I see is them taking up space because I don't know where to put them or haven't figured out a use for them lately.  This realization feels like a really big success for me.
